An act of sportsmanship that took place at Olympic Park, Melbourne, during the Australian Mile Championship’s in March 1956, in which John Landy stopped to help fallen Ron Clarke was voted the Finest Sporting Moment of the century.
Landy’s feat in going on to win the mile race has been overshadowed by the unselfish gesture that is part of Australian sporting folklore.
He was the second man to break the four-minute mile barrier in the mile run and held the world records for the 1500-metre run and the mile race.
