Fred Goldsmith’s illustrious career with South Melbourne began when he was just eighteen years of age, in 1951. In his nine years in the red and white, he would go on to play 119 games and kick 107 goals. During the early part of his career, he was played in the forward half of the ground, as he had been a renowned goalkicker in his junior football days. Not until his third season of senior football was he moved to full-back, where thanks to his brilliant marking ability he was rarely beaten. Despite being pipped for the Club’s Best and Fairest award in 1955, that was the year that Fred Goldsmith became the first – and to this day, only – full-back to win the Brownlow Medal. He represented Victoria ten times from 1956 to 1958, and in 1956 won the Simpson Medal for his best on ground performance for Victoria against Western Australia. Fred was named at full-back in the Swans Team of the Century.
